Set off from Tallarook, the western gateway of the Great Victorian Rail Trail. As you leave town, seek out ‘Nook’ by Donna Marcus – a clever assemblage of vintage enamel kitchenware, playing on the classic Australian colloquialism, "Things is crook in Tallarook".
As you pedal into the National Trust-listed Trawool Valley, the scenery shifts to dramatic granite boulders and rolling hills. Stop in at the elegant Trawool Estate – whether for a gourmet wood-fired pizza or a cold drink on the terrace, the views are second to none.
Pedal on and you’ll encounter ‘Traces’ by Yu-Fang Chi, a delicate, metal seed-like sculpture that captures the essence of growth and transition within the valley.
Approaching Yea, look for the striking ‘Mirnong’ installation by Christabel Wigley, which honours the Yam Daisy and the deep agricultural history of the Taungurung women. Continuing toward Yea, the trail will lead to the tranquil Yea Wetlands. Take a walk to spot the elusive platypus before exploring the heritage-listed Yea Railway Station.
Whether you decide to stay overnight or turn around for the 76km return journey, the stories etched into the landscape make every kilometre count.
