Cruise out of town through the Mullum Wetlands, keeping an eye out for local birdlife, before passing the striking and immersive ‘Responding’ artwork by Robbie Rowlands, a 39m mobile phone tower that gracefully arches over the trail.
The ride to Bonnie Doon is a highlight, featuring a crossing of the majestic Glad Phillips Bridge over Lake Eildon. Ride along the water’s edge to find Cara Johnson’s ‘Remnant’ sculpture, an iron tracing of a branch from a drowned tree, found washed up on the lake’s shoreline. Stop to refuel in Bonnie Doon before tackling the climb to Merton Gap for sweeping panoramic views.
Upon reaching peaceful Merton, admire the historic General Store and rural atmosphere before turning back toward Mansfield. The return leg offers a fresh perspective, with the shifting silhouette of Mt Buller dominating the horizon for a truly unforgettable finish.
