The following FAQs apply to the Bushfires in January 2026 that have severely impacted the Great Victorian Rail Trail.
Due to damage from the January 2026 bushfires, sections of the Great Victorian Rail Trail are closed. This closure affects trail use within the Cheviot, Molesworth, Koriella, Yarck and Kanumbra areas, including the spurline between Cathkin and Alexandra.
As of 25 February 2026, the Great Victorian Rail Trail is open from Tallarook to the Cheviot Tunnel just outside of Yea, and from Merton to Mansfield. A small section from the Alexandra trailhead through to Maintongoon Road is also open.

The Great Victorian Rail Trail is currently closed between Yea and Merton. This includes the spurline between Cathkin and Alexandra. The trail closure means that all access points within these sections are not to be used.
This closure affects trail use within the Molesworth, Cheviot, Koriella, Alexandra, Yarck and Kanumbra areas.
There are no detours are in place. The trail closure means that all access points within these sections are not to be used. Where the rail trail is closed, you will need to turn around and exit via your entry point on the trail.
Crews are working to undertake impact assessments and plan for repairs and rebuilding of damaged and destroyed bridges and culverts, and removal of hazardous trees.

Reopening dates are dependent on safety assessments and infrastructure renewal. Initial reports are that there is significant damage to the trail within the closed section.
